An homage to the genius of Mark Rothko - this two foot square encaustic painting features brick red, verdant green, cobalt blue, and black hues. Encaustic painting is an ancient art medium which translated from Greek means “to heat or burn in”. Natural bees wax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap) are combined to create a medium to which pigments are added. The medium is then melted and applied onto a solid board surface with a brush or tool. Each layer is reheated to fuse it to the prior layer. Art is mounted on a hidden box frame (see photo for details).

Signed on the reverse by artist Susan Gellner. As a girl in the Pacific Northwest, Susan often climbed a towering tree perched upon a hill near her family home. Where far above it all she found peace and solitude. Today she finds the same in her studio. Located in rural central Montana -it’s light filled open space inspires a body of work based on color, texture, and mood. Shown in galleries throughout Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Washington her paintings are the manifestation of a life well spent.
