"Madonna In Red And White" by Jacob Elshin is a remarkably fresh take on classic iconography. Over sixty years since it was created. its bold brushwork in rich tones and gold embellishment still inspires. Signed "Elshin" in the lower right corner". Oil paint on masonite board in its original frame.

Jacob Alexander Elshin was born in Saint Petersburg, Russa in 1892. He served as an officer in the Imperial Russian Army. Then studies at the St Petersburg Academy. Post the revolution he arrived in Seattle in 1923. Where his art was described as "straight pictorialist". Ultimately working for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Federal Art Project. Creating a range of murals in pubic buildings throughout the northwest. Later he also provided consultative services to the U.S. Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture. Later in his career he became known for his religious paintings which redefined Byzantine elements in a modern way. His work is included in many renowned collections including the Seattle Art Museum which owns 8 Elshin works. Jacob died in Seattle in 1976
