This 19th century Qing Dynasty ink stone box features a carved top with a lotus blossom and pair of Mandarin ducks. Symbolizing purity, love, marital bliss, and fidelity. For centuries Chinese scholars ground hardened ink "sticks" on the rough interior surface of ink stone vessels made of deep black "She" stone. Mixed with water kept in the carved "well". Then using its raised lip to insure smooth application onto the writing surface. This antique now makes the perfect addition to any table-scape, desk top, or decorative vignette.
Measures 3.78" wide x 6.5" long x 1" high.
