Since the 17th Century Portuguese artisans have been hand-painting faience ceramics. The "Forest" pattern features a whimsical mix of deer, peacocks, and rabbits amidst a range of intricate foliage, bridges, "follies", and castles. As interpreted by each artist - no two are alike yet they all replicate 17th century originals. This large scalloped bowl appears to have never been used. It features a circular central vignette set within embellished border panels. Painted marks on back read "370 HAND PAINTED XVII CENTURY MADE IN PORTUGAL N. Affixed sticker below reads "HANDPAINTED REPRODUCTION OF XVII CENTURY MADE IN PORTUGAL".
