Since the 17th Century Portuguese artisans have been hand-painting faience ceramics. The "Forest" pattern features a whimsical mix of deer, peacocks, and rabbits amidst a range of intricate foliage, bridges, "follies", and castles. As interpreted by each artist - no two are alike yet they all replicate 17th century originals. This elongated octagonal platter appears to have never been used. It features a central vignette set within multiple borders. Includes three (unused) drilled holes on back rim for plate hanger. Painted marks on back read "33 HAND PAINTED XVII CENTURY MADE IN PORTUGAL IS. Affixed sticker below reads "HANDPAINTED REPRODUCTION OF XVII CENTURY MADE IN PORTUGAL".
