For thousands of years potters across the Philippine islands have been creating vessels for many uses. This massive piece comes from the mountainous Kalinga province on the island of Luzon. Most likely it was used for funereal tributes of rice, grains, and the like. Two sides feature an incised butterfly - symbolic of the reincarnation of a loved one. The alternate sides display a large incised bird which was believed to protect mortals. Purchased in the 1960s by an American living in the Philippines - it most likely dates from the 19th to early 20th centuries. Today it is if nothing else an amazing decorative statement with a patina that can only be acquired by centuries of use.

Measures 20" high x 9.5" wide x 9.5" deep.

In good antique condition. Structurally sound, there is damage to three of the four base corners. Two of which appear to have been repaired. Along with a running crack along one of the underside edges. All of which are quite normal and to be expected with Philippine pottery of this advanced age/use. See photos for details.
