During the 19th century aristocrats and connoisseurs embarked on a "Grand Tour" to see Italy's art and architecture. Upon their return it was de rigueur to display replicas of said sights seen. Proof of the owner's worldly pursuits.

This antique bronze is a replica of the famous "Lion of Venice". The winged feline which sits atop a column high above the Piazzetta San Marco.  Created in China around 300 BC. And brought to Venice around 1268. At which point an open book was added beneath it's feet. Inscribed "Pax tibi Marce, Evangelista meus" - "Peace be with you Mark, my evangelist"

Finely cast in bronze with a beautiful aged patinated surface. Unmarked. Measures 10" wide x 4.5" deep x 6.25" high. In excellent antique condition. Structurally sound with no dents, cracks, or damage of note. See photos for details.
