In China a ripe peach is symbolic of marriage or spring (fresh start). Thus this mid 19th century Qing dynasty lacquer box is shaped like a peach. Meaning that it most likely originally held a bridal gift. Quite large - it is covered with a rich vermillion red lacquer. Which is decorated with a hand-painted pattern of Chinese symbols in gold. Which includes bats (good luck). phoenix (heavenly power), pomegranates (fertility), and clouds (heavenly will). Interior and bottom are black lacquer. No makers mark.

Measures 11.75" wide x 11" deep x 7" high.

In very good antique condition. Structurally sound - the lacquer external surface is stable with some hairline cracks. And a few minor "dings". There are some areas of very old lacquer loss. Including two chips on the front center "peach" tip. Plus two chips on the outer rim. Along with several on the box and lid interior rims. See photos for details.
