Eric Norstad (1924-2013) was a highly esteemed Marin County California potter during the second half the 20th century. This dinner/charger plate features an early, hand-inscribed "EN" mark which dates it to the 1960's. A period during which he studied under and was highly influenced by Shoji Hamada - the founder of the mid-century modern Japanese "Mingei" ceramics movement.
This extra large dinner plate/charger was crafted using a unique stoneware clay mix developed by the artist himself. Hand-formed on a potters wheel, it was glazed by Eric Norstad using Shumi-e stye brushwork in an abstract pattern. Then fired to 2500 Fahrenheit for twenty four hours. The end result being a smooth surfaced and very durable piece that is highly resistant to scratching, chipping, or cracks. Measures approximately 11" in diameter x 1" high.
In excellent vintage condition. With no chips, cracks, "slivers", crazing, glaze loss, or issues of note.
Be sure to check out our shop to see additional chargers by Eric Norstad. All of which were frequently used together by the original hipster owner when entertaining her family and friends.
