Striking bold pair of vintage glazed stoneware figurines. Based on ancient Chinese Tang Dynasty examples - each features a Chinese warrior sitting atop their horse. Pearched upon an arched based that replicates a Chinese roof tile. Covered in a purposefully distressed/patinated deep teal green/turquoise glaze. Each has a label on the underside that reads "GEMSTONE CLEAN WITH SOFT DRY CLOTH FAN CO N.Y. "Fan Co" was a post WW2 company that designed, manufactured, and sold "art ware" out of one of the New York City borough until the early 1970's. This duo are crafted in their a proprietary stoneware mix called "gemstone".
Each measures 12.5" high x 8.5" wide x 4.5" deep.
Overall both pieces are in excellent vintage condition. Each is structurally sound and retains their original - purposeful surface" patination". One figure is missing its upraised arm/fist. Some minor chips to the base edges and underside. See photos for details.
