The Catalina Island Pottery was established in 1927 by William Wrigley Jr - owner of the island at that time. Its purpose was to provide employment for island residents. While leveraging the island's natural clay and mineral oxides. Situated on Pebbly Beach near Avalon the pottery quickly became highly coveted. Selling beyond the island's shores in proprietary mainland shops, department, and specialty stores. Ultimately the Wrigley family closed the pottery in 1936. As production costs were more than the income derived. Hence today Catalina Island Pottery pieces are rare and highly collected. Not only for their design, form, and colors. But also because of their scarcity.
