Born in 1888 and the son of a sign painter - Frederick B. Kress arrived in San Francisco just before the 1906 earthquake. Studying art at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art (later known as the California School of Fine Arts). Between 1912 and 1917 he was a member of a group of California plein air artists including C. Chapel Judson, Constance Mackey, Emil Grebs, Martin Syvertson, Lyman Jennings, William McAvey, William Gaw, and Walter Sutter. Who captured Big Sur, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, and Marin County on weekend excursions. Exhibiting his work at the San Francisco Art Association until 1920. Ultimately opting to earn his living as a sign painter for five decades. While continuing to draw and paint on weekends.
Post his death in 1970 a large body of his academic work was held in trust by family members. This unsigned and undated male nude was part of said cache. Expertly rendered in charcoal the full sheet measures 19" wide x 25" high. In excellent condition with no tears, rips, creasing, folds, foxing, or discoloration with the exception of some minor examples along the outer edge. .See photos for details
Currently this work of art is displayed within a 24" wide x 30" high walnut stained wooden frame. Sitting behind polycarbonate "glass" atop non-acidic foam core. While ready for be hung "as is" the drawing is not attached to the backing (floating - no tape - no adhesives). And thus is ready for archival framing should the buyer opt to do so.
